As a child growing up in Lexington, Kentucky, Elise Ellison-Coons said she’s always been drawn to assisting others, and after connecting with crime victims, was motivated to enter the field of Criminal Justice.

“Hearing their stories had a big impact on me and made me want to be part of the solution. Choosing to study criminal justice felt like the right path because it gave me the tools to support as well as advocate for others, particularly those who need it most,” said Ellison-Coons who was also a star basketball player in her hometown and first learned of Keiser University after an invitation to try out for its team.

As Ellison-Coons excelled in the classroom and on the court at Keiser University throughout her four years of study, it was the Human Exploitation class in the second semester of her junior year that solidified her career focus.

“It opened my eyes to the harsh realities of human trafficking as well as helped me realize this is where I want to make some difference. My professional goal is to become part of the FBI’s human trafficking task force. In that role, I can work to combat the issue. To me, there is nothing better than being able to help others.  Even if I’m able to make a difference in only one person’s life, that’s enough to know I’m on the right path—not only professionally but personally as well,” she said.

Ellison-Coons advises fellow learners to persevere, even if they are unable to see the entire road ahead.

“Realizing your dreams takes time, and that is something I had to learn myself. There were many moments when I doubted whether I was even in the right major because nothing felt like it was truly calling me – until I took that one class that changed everything. What most helped me was having enough patience as well as trusting that I was on the right path, even if I couldn’t see the full picture yet. Everyone’s path looks different, so do not compare your timeline to that of someone else. Remain focused and open, and trust that your time will come,” she said.

Keiser University’s Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice provides preparation in many areas of the criminal justice system. Topics include but are not limited to: deviant behavior, forensics, law enforcement and investigation, victimology, private security, corrections and juvenile justice and how components work together and are governed by our laws, the Supreme Court, and the U.S. Constitution. This exploration of the American criminal justice system culminates with an emphasis on research, analysis and the future of the system.
